Blackwater Gulch Kickstarter 2 arrives

Yay another kickstarter finally arrives and I have to say I quite happy with the much improved quality of the sculpts in this second wave. So what did I get:

3 gang sets and all the hired hands stretch goal minis

The Tranquility Crew Trying to remember if this was the 1st or 2nd kickstarter to make mini versions of the Firefly crew, I have to say I am very happy with these, only shame is that it isn't the full crew. Can only hope the rest get sculpted down the track. All the sculpts capture the characters very well, though the coat over the doctor seems a bit odd. Looks a bit like Mal's coat draped over him. Also not sure why these aren't cast on their tabs like all the other minis.

Wilde's Rangers Cool gang of US soldiers packing an excellent looking gatling gun. All the minis in this set were sculpted in 3D and printed. You wouldn't know that looking at the casts, no striations or other usual markers of a 3D print. Also one of the guys with a pistol and knife really looks like Harison Ford.

The Widowmakers third gang I got was the all girl gang. Again they have been all 3D sculpted but these haven't produced quite as nice results as Wilde's Rangers. These have a few of the oddities of scale that you see a bit in recent Malifaux minis. You can see the extreme thinness of the girl on the lower left. Her bare arm is almost as thin as a wire at the wrist. Her upper body and face all seem very small while her legs seem much chunkier. The pistols on all of the girls seem too small in the back half of the gun with the cylinder no larger than the barrel. I'm a bit curious how this set will turn out, I think I'll bulk that arm a bit with putty.

Finally all the hired hands. I got a couple doubles here from the 1st kickstarter. As for the new sculpts some of these characters may look a bit familiar ;) shame Marty McFly didn't make it in the stretch goals. You can definately see the marked improvement in sculpting quality between the earlier hired hand minis and the new ones. All of these look great to paint up, easily recommend all of them.

Blackwater Gulch - The Clancy Gang finished

After a marathon painting session with my friend trying to paint Los Bandidos Mexicanos and The Bloodwolf Tribe as well as some Judge Dredd minis I finished off the Clancy's as well as some lasercut objective marker terrain.

So here is the gang

Glad I got them all done in time. After taking the photos we packed them and the town up to go to Cancon next weekend. Hope Andrew manages to get his gangs done as well.

Lots more progress on the Clancy gang to get them ready for Cancon

Blackwater Gulch Clancy Gang - progress

I spent one of my last days of holidays watching movies, playing Lollipop Chainsaw and cleaning up these guys. Forgot how much I hate filing.

Photobucket

During the clean up I discovered a dimple on the girls back and realized she should have had a holstered  rifle go back there. So following the dimensions of the one that came with the strong man with the sledge hammer I cut a shape out of appropriate thickness plastic card and filed it into shape. After attaching it I figured what the hell and sculpted her a pony tail as well to make it a bit more obvious she was a girl and her short hair looked like it was tied up like a pony tail should be there anyway. Apart from that these all went together with no conversions apart from cutting the running leaders tab in half so he could be positioned more centered over his base.

Photobucket

After a simple prime with some white auto spray the detail on the sculpts started to show a bit better and my appreciation rose.

Photobucket

I briefly borrowed the carry case from a set of Reaper cowboys I had gotten recently to take the Clancy's for painting and took the time to compare the size of the ranges. Reapers cowboys being somewhat over tall compared to every other range now have some cow folk to easily mix with.

Photobucket

After a busy day of painting I have some progress, still a bunch to do on most of them though

Photobucket

Photobucket

She's the closest to finished with just some dark wash needed around all her belts and the metal areas to be painted.

Photobucket

I'm quite happy how the denim jeans turned out

Photobucket

I also finished off the guy on the left, he'd been about 90% done for months and just needed his hat painted and face and gun detailed. These 2 are from Dead Lands. I'd brought them along so I could get my basing colours to match.

Photobucket

Great face on this guy, still a fair bit to do on him, I think I may need to darken up his shirt a bit. Tempted to give him checkered pants.

Photobucket

I know bringing cards to a gun fight seems a bit silly but they'll be fun to paint.

Photobucket

Odd look with the double layered shirts.

Photobucket

This guy doesn't seem to fit in with the western look for me but figured I may as well get him done anyway. Basically started with some fairly dark colours then did a GW Black wash. Bit of highlighting will bring out the coat detail.

Photobucket

This ugly fella makes me think of Rooster Gogburn from True Grit. Shame the sculpt is probably one of the weakest of the set.

Photobucket

I kinda like this guy but the single shot cut down rifle is an odd choice.

Photobucket

The leader of the gang is definitely the most dynamically posed. Bit of a bugger to photograph though. Think he's a Brother Vinni sculpt.
