New Board Games

I dropped by the Toy & Games Expo on the long weekend to see what was happening and try out some boardgame demos, also talk Nerf with a Sydney Nerf club thing that I wasn't expecting to be there at all. I didn't even know there was a Sydney Nerf Club thing, annoyingly I lost their card :(

Anyway I got to also try out some wargame demos like my friends demoing Malifaux and Hall of Heroes demoing a cowboy game which I totally forget the name of but have these amusing photos

Like all expo/cons though you eventually loose control of your wallet and splurge on buying games you don't really need cause they were a bit discounted XD

It started with this odd choice

 photo IMG_3172_zps26f7fb7a.jpg

the shop guy took $5 off when I said I was tempted to use the monsters for a Malifaux dreamer crew.

I think they look very good and the paint jobs aren't terrible either, just need a bit of claw sharpening, rebasing and some touch up work. Question is do I use them as 4 teddies or some other mix of things?

After the wallet was opened I talked the shop guy into a discount if I bought a bundle of stuff. I'd been kinda wanting Mice & Mystics for ages since a friend got it and I was so impressed with the minis and components  (sorry the photo is a bit blurry)

Also got the City of Theives expansion....

the latest Time Line Diversity card game and...

a game of Pirate Penguins, it's totally a kids game but I couldn't resist since it comes with a big ship and PIRATE PENGUINS was cheap. I can't really resist buying a game that has penguins that look like the ones I draw myself.

At least I didn't spend as much as Nick.

Surely you've been painting something?

Well yes I have but also been very distracted by Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider and etc. Also I got a bunch of X-Wing. Figured I should get around to taking some photos and putting up some sort of update.

my main efforts lately has been to finish up the Invaders from Outer Space miniatures. I've gotten through half of the heroes so far.

Not a bad strong man once you get him painted. He was well deserving some paint after his hammer kill the Zard Beast 3 times in one game :)

The trick shooter got her dress redone completely, I think the brighter colour is much better than the heap of brown from before.

I quite enjoyed painting the red coat on the ring master. He still needs a touch of highlights on the black areas and the base needs a lick of paint.

I've also been trying to get a few of my McMourning crew done for Malifaux. The Bete Noir started off as a bit of an experiment in trying out the Army Painter washes to see how they compared to the older GW ones. I ended up really liking the look of the aged white look on her dress that makes her look like the ghost of a jilted bride. After a clean paint job I splashed a bit of Tamiya clear red for the bloody hands and knives. I need to do up the base a bit with a grave stone and some groundwork.

ACK ACK AAAACCCK ACKK ACK!!! - Mars Attacks Martians from Invaders from Outer Space - The Martian Game

 photo IMG_1403_zps970c1604.jpg

I'm a fan of old bad B movies and unlike most critics really liked the Mars Attacks movie so when I spotted the Flying Frog Invaders From Outer Space game I had to pester my friend to get it in on the next game order. To go along with it I also ordered a pair of Pegasus Scout UFOs. They serve no purpose in the game they just look cool. I might get some more.

 photo IMG_1398_zpsdda01b9a.jpg

Here's all the minis from the game and the beautifully simple to assemble UFOs flanked by a couple of recently purchased Mars Attacks martian action figures by Mezco Toys. Surprisingly it was possible to clean off the mold lines from the minis bendy plastic without making a total mess of them using some sandpaper and diamond files.

Ack Ack!

 photo IMG_1609_zps0fe04ea5.jpg

I primed with Army Painter undead green and started with a soft tone wash on the faces. Gave a nice Martian skin tone, then I picked out the eyes in off white and dotted with red. Unfortunately there's no brain ridges on the minis. Technically I could freehand in highlights to look like brains but there's like 19 of the little buggers. For the armour colour I went for a stroll through my FLGS with an action figure in hand comparing greens till I found a close match without driving myself nuts mixing the colour. Closest match was GW Sybarite Green. Really should have airbrushed them all but did it the old fashioned way. Backpacks were then painted in red and then the guns, collars and tops of backpacks were painted gunmetal. My tiny bit of squad identification is through the gun tops, 9 have red the other 9 blue. The leader's power sword had me digging through old paints at the folks place to see if my fleuro paints still can be used. It got painted Fleuro orange.

After the base coating I gave them a coat of Army Painter Dark Tone Wash.

 photo IMG_1612_zps697dd314.jpg

After letting the wash dry I went back in to clean up the armour with Sybarite Green and a bit of edge highlighting with a touch of white mixed into the green.

The Zard Beast is still very in progress. After priming with zombie green I dusted him from above with white spray and started from that for my colour scheme. I'm shading him into Snakebite Leather in the face and arms and then into reds on the feet. Got the inspiration from a fellow painter showing me a beasty from Star Wars The Old Republic. Figured he could use a base too so I'll stick him to a 60mm rounded lip base.

Lastly here's the UFOs which if you remove the seat from inside you can easily fit a based miniature inside.

 photo IMG_1621_zpsace76f17.jpg

I've also started on the heroes of Earth from the game.... Carnies! those cabbage smelling, small handed freaks are the only hope to stop the Martian invasion !!!!

Here is the trick shooter who will probably get a different coloured dress and Jojo the dancing bear!

Zombie Survivors progress

In a move unseen by my gaming collection I've actually been playing more Zombicide than istting down painting the thing. I'm not sure if this idea will catch on, or if everyone will give up on the game as soon as I finish painting....

Anyway I'm still working on the survivors 1st before I start tackling the zombie hordes. I've finished up Sheldon (Dave in game) and added Lucas to the mix (custom character) the great Fanboy sculpt from RAFM. Oh and if you were wondering where the Bride and Ash came from. The Bride is also from RAFM's USX Modern Day Heroes line. Ash is from Studio Miniatures Survivors. Must say I'm awful tempted to add their Scrubs doctors and patients zombies to the horde, you know if I didn't already have like 100 or something zombies to paint.

I got the idea from the Zombicide tiles to add some junk to my bases like drink cans made or plastic sprue and I found some tabloid newspapers with zombie headlines and an odd issue of the Onion and scaled them down in Illustrator to about 1cm across and printed out a heap of them to cut out, fold and glue onto bases. With a coat of thin PVA glue I could aslo do washes on them to dirty them up without it soaking into the paper.

Gimme Some Sugar, Baby!

Photobucket

Since I got ZOMBICIDE I've been digging through my old pile of lead for the unused zombie hunters I've picked up over the years and never bothered to do anything with such as Not Ash from Studio Miniatures and Not the Bride and Not the chick from Underworld from RAFM as well as Not Buffy from Hasslefree just to see how they compare size wise with the ZOMBICIDE plastic survivors and since it'll be a wait till the stretch goal minis get released.

I'm happy to say despite the slightly bendy PVC plastic the survivors are made from, it is possible to file off the mold lines. I've gotten through cleaning up all of them. Now to prime them. Bye Bye rainbow.
